The Jersey Village City Council plans to issue $44 million in Certificates of Obligation (COs) — $20M for water/sewer improvements and $24M for a new Civic Center Complex — without voter approval. This decision by as few as three council members could burden homeowners and businesses for decades, increasing property taxes significantly.
For a $450,000 home, expect annual tax hikes of $918–$1,031 (no exemptions) or $735–$825 (20% homestead exemption) over 40 years at 4.5–5.5% interest. General Obligation (GO) bonds, requiring voter approval, would cost less ($845–$975 or $676–$780, respectively, at 4.0–5.0%), but the council favors COs, which a mere three members can approve, committing thousands of us to $76.066 million in debt.
Transparency is lacking. Vague notices in the Cypress Creek Mirror obscure potential fund diversion to non-essential projects, like the Civic Center, while critical needs, such as replacing the demolished Clark Henry Pool, are sidelined. The council’s reliance on questionable advice and lack of town hall engagement further erode trust. Without a petition securing 275 signatures by July 21, 2025, we lose our voice. What's with the name?
It originated from a debate over City Council dodging voters to push millions in Certificates of Obligation for vanity projects. A council member’s relative boasted of her wealth, dismissing opponents of tax as “moochers” leeching off the rich. We reclaimed the term to fight reckless spending and demand accountability!
